Implemented in PR #926 (commit ae95427) by FinnRG, adding CRAFT_PROVIDERS_DISABLE_EOL_SOURCES_CHECK to skip the old-releases.ubuntu.com check in UbuntuBaseConfiguration._update_eol_sources. Shipped in craft-providers 3.5.0 (2026-03-12).

Resolution: closed resolved

Reason: The feature request was accepted and implemented by the reporter in PR #926 (commit ae95427, 'feat: allow disabling eol source updates'), using the env var name suggested by @lengau. The changelog for the 3.5.0 release (2026-03-12) records 'Add CRAFT_PROVIDERS_DISABLE_EOL_SOURCES_CHECK support to skip EOL sources checks', and ubuntu.py now returns early from _update_eol_sources when the variable is set, with unit tests in tests/unit/bases/test_ubuntu_buildd.py.

Issue body

### What needs to get done Ideally some option to skip the EOL checks (specifically [this](https://github.com/canonical/craft-providers/blob/ccb946bd852e4d9288899d8e0f49d7ac17a265f5/craft_providers/bases/ubuntu.py#L242) line), to prevent `craft-providers` from trying to reach out to old-releases.u.c. I spoke with Callahan already and he suggested adding a `CRAFT_PROVIDERS_DISABLE_EOL_SUPPORT` environment variable. I would offer contributing this feature, if it is accepted. ### Why it needs to get done At Launchpad we use `craft-providers` in [`lpci`](https://launchpad.net/lpci), which is deployed in a very constricted environment. We recently upgraded to the latest `craft-providers` version and experienced issues on series like focal due to `craft-providers` trying to connect to old-releases.u.c, which is not whitelisted, mostly because we don't support EOL bases anyway. An example log can be found [here](https://launchpadlibrarian.net/850472943/buildlog_ci_launchpad_cff177e2420661c228789b3bab9d6c1df1f6104a_BUILDING.txt.gz). The library tries to connect multiple times and then fails with the message "Failed to get https://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/focal/".
