Current evaluation

Native kernel variant specification and automatic cleanup of leftover kernels during image builds is requested, currently under investigation as maintainers review unexpected kernel inclusions.

Suggested action: needs review

Reason: The issue has been triaged and acknowledged by a maintainer, who noted that the functionality theoretically exists but requires investigation into edge cases where unexpected kernels are included. Further technical review and scoping are needed before implementation can proceed.

Issue body

### Check existing issues - [x] I've verified that this request isn't described by any existing issues. ### Request I'd like to see a native way to specify the kernel variant to use that ensure other kernel packages have been correctly removed/purged livecd-rootfs has a [replace_kernel](https://git.launchpad.net/livecd-rootfs/tree/live-build/functions#n1296) function with the desired functionality. ### The problem it solves Creating cloud-specific images requires the use of cloud-specific kernel variants and it is undesirable to ship an image with multiple/leftover kernels.
