This is a continuation of PR https://github.com/canonical/rockcraft/pull/475.
Based on Daniele's [feedback](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L-OtMf7gOgGQWmVCr2vdQIPziqDayUZs1VOQ4sv3Lwc/edit#heading=h.d0r0hqp8qr2z). I am making the rest of changes here, since I can't add commits on top of the original PR.
