Current evaluation

Closed 2026-08-25 by ~mr-cal as already fixed: Snapcraft part steps can pick architecture-specific sources via build-for env vars (SNAPCRAFT_ARCH_BUILD_FOR/SNAPCRAFT_TARGET_ARCH); no new patch was made.

Resolution: closed not a bug

Reason: No code change was required: maintainer ~mr-cal closed the card noting Snapcraft already exposes build-for architecture environment variables usable in part steps to select arch-specific sources, pointing to the step execution environment docs. Those variables were added in snapcraft PR #4313 and hardened in #4332.

Issue body

Applications snap up great when the ISV/upstream already provides pre-compiled binaries. That is, until you want to support multiple architectures. Sergio designed this here, but the card was re-scoped to just cover architecture-specific stage packages: https://trello.com/c/yBFYmonw/49-support-per-architecture-entries-in-stage-packages#comment-581b4b593f68e9c0ba861fa3 This would benefit many upstreams, particularly traefik.

stealth/space-bunny-alpha — closed not a bug Closed as implemented without a new PR: Snapcraft part steps can select architecture-specific sources through build-time environment variables, as documented for step execution.
qwen/qwen3.6-35b-a3b — — Fixed. Snapcraft now supports architecture-specific sources via environment variables, enabling per-architecture package staging in parts.

  • Likely Fixed By: snapcraft#4313 (confidence 78%)

Added SNAPCRAFT_ARCH_BUILD_FOR/SNAPCRAFT_ARCH_BUILD_ON envvars for core20, the mechanism cited as the resolution.

  • Related To: snapcraft#4332 (confidence 55%)

Follow-up fixing errors when the build-for arch variable could not be evaluated in part step environments.
