Current evaluation

Fixed Snapcraft startup on Solus and openSUSE by replacing apt-dependent .deb handling with arfile in snapcore/snapcraft#1729 (ff83bf338).

Resolution: closed resolved

Reason: snapcore/snapcraft#1729 changed .deb extraction to use arfile and landed as commit ff83bf338, removing the apt initialization failure on non-Debian systems.

Issue body

I installed the snapcraft snap from edge (2.34+git97.af78689) on Solus and openSUSE Tumbleweed. Attempting to run snapcraft on Solus fails with the following traceback: Traceback (most recent call last):   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/bin/snapcraft", line 11, in <module>     load_entry_point('snapcraft==2.34', 'console_scripts', 'snapcraft')()   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/pkg_resources/__init__.py", line 565, in load_entry_point     return get_distribution(dist).load_entry_point(group, name)   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/pkg_resources/__init__.py", line 2631, in load_entry_point     return ep.load()   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/pkg_resources/__init__.py", line 2291, in load     return self.resolve()   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/pkg_resources/__init__.py", line 2297, in resolve     module = __import__(self.module_name, fromlist=['__name__'], level=0)   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/__init__.py", line 407, in <module>     from snapcraft._store import ( # noqa   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/_store.py", line 32, in <module>     from snapcraft.cli import echo   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/cli/__init__.py", line 28, in <module>     from . import env   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/cli/env.py", line 18, in <module>     from snapcraft.internal import errors, lxd   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/lxd/__init__.py", line 19, in <module>     from ._project import Project # noqa   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/lxd/_project.py", line 29, in <module>     from snapcraft.internal import lifecycle   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/lifecycle/__init__.py", line 20, in <module>     from ._packer import pack # noqa   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/lifecycle/_packer.py", line 26, in <module>     from ._runner import execute   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/lifecycle/_runner.py", line 26, in <module>     from snapcraft.internal import (   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/meta.py", line 38, in <module>     from snapcraft.internal.sources import get_source_handler_from_type   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/sources/__init__.py", line 94, in <module>     from ._deb import Deb # noqa   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/snapcraft/internal/sources/_deb.py", line 17, in <module>     import debian.debfile   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/debian/debfile.py", line 26, in <module>     from debian.changelog import Changelog   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/debian/changelog.py", line 37, in <module>     from debian import debian_support   File "/snap/snapcraft/727/lib/python3.6/site-packages/debian/debian_support.py", line 31, in <module>     apt_pkg.init() SystemError: W:Unable to read /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ - DirectoryExists (2: No such file or directory), E:Unable to determine a suitable packaging system type

stealth/space-bunny-alpha — closed stale Closed without a fix or comments after seven days; Snapcraft snap failures on Solus and openSUSE were abandoned.
qwen/qwen3.6-35b-a3b — — Closed without resolution. Hard dependency on Debian apt_pkg caused runtime failures on non-Debian distros. The report was abandoned after seven days with zero comments or patches.
qwen/qwen3.6-35b-a3b — — Closed without resolution, likely abandoned. The snapcraft snap fails on Solus and openSUSE due to apt_pkg.init() crashing when /etc/apt/apt.conf.d is absent. Zero comments indicate no fix was provided.
qwen/qwen3.6-35b-a3b — — Abandoned due to inactivity. The apt dependency causing crashes on non-Debian systems was later removed in subsequent snapcraft releases, resolving the issue.
qwen3.6-35b-a3b-mtp-q6 — — Closed without comments or resolution. Likely abandoned or superseded by newer snapcraft versions that removed the Debian-specific apt dependency causing the crash on non-Debian distributions.
