Current evaluation

Bionic python plugin breakage was fixed by installing python-distutils in merged PR canonical/snapcraft#2058 (commit cec1a111c); reported by ~bjornt with a patch, later refined by d1fd9a226.

Resolution: closed resolved

Reason: Maintainer ~sergiusens closed the Launchpad bug pointing at snapcore/snapcraft#2058, which was merged as commit cec1a111c ("python plugin: install python-distutils when run on bionic"). The plugin gained a follow-up refinement in d1fd9a226 ("python plugin: properly handle distutils on bionic"), so the reporter's proposed patch landed with proper bionic-version gating.

Issue body

There were some changes to the python packages in the Ubuntu archive during the last days, which broke the python plugin if you are on bionic: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/tSW5RrZMBd/ I fixed with the following patch to snapcraft, but it needs some checks so that it's only applied if you run bionic (or newer): https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/QdD5gmZwyZ/
