Current evaluation

Enhancement request: let parse-info accept a bare appstream filename and have the extractor search $stage/usr/share/{appinfo,metainfo}/ and PWD instead of requiring a full relative path. Still unimplemented; only an unrelated 2018 comment, labelled 19.04-external.

Suggested action: keep open

Reason: The requested behaviour is still absent in current code: extract_lifecycle_metadata() only probes part_src_dir/part_build_dir/part_install_dir for the exact parse-info path (`if pathlib.Path(location, metadata_file.lstrip('/')).is_file()`), and docs/reference/external-package-information.rst still tells users to write the full `usr/share/metainfo/...` path — so the report is accurate and the feature request remains valid rather than obsolete. It is only a recipe-authoring convenience (no bug, no data loss, and related_issues/git_log_search surfaced no other issues or commits demanding it), and it lacks maintainer buy-in: the sole comment is an unrelated paste of KDE build output from ~sergiusens, so there is no agreed precedence/ambiguity design (bare-name match in multiple dirs, the questionable 'relative to snapcraft PWD' clause, backward compatibility) to implement against.

Issue body

Currently the appstream extractor requires `parse-info` to contain the complete path for appstream files. This is excessively repetitive and useless information as there are only two well defined directories where the files may be located. Should that change in the future it also means every developer needs to update the paths instead of snapcraft doing it once for everyone by updating the search paths there. It would be far superior if the developer specified `org.example.foo.appdata.xml` and the extractor looked for that file in $stage/usr/share/{appinfo,metainfo}/ and relative to snapcraft PWD.
