Current evaluation

Regression: documented --add-ca-certificates option errors with 'unrecognized arguments' since snapcraft 7.0; blocks private repos with self-signed certs. Reproduced by maintainer, no fix since 2023.

Suggested action: keep open

Reason: The regression is real and still true: `snapcraft/cli.py` GLOBAL_ARGS only registers -V/--version and -t/--trace, and a repo-wide grep for 'certificate' finds no CA-certificate handling, so the option is genuinely absent. mr-cal reproduced it and diagnosed that the flag 'is not being properly parsed and passed to the core18|20 code'. However, I found the sole original implementation came from commit 7389ae516 'cli: provide option to install ca certs into build environment (#3224)' and was deleted with ffb164b7a 'chore: remove snapcraft_legacy', so the affected code is retired while the underlying user need persists in the new craft-application CLI — that ambiguity (obsolete legacy bug vs. valid new feature request) is what holds confidence down.

Issue body

"--add-ca-certificates" is currently supported option described in "Build options" https://snapcraft.io/docs/build-options But actually snapcraft 7.2.9 makes error as follows $ snapcraft --add-ca-certificates /etc/ssl/certs Usage: snapcraft [options] command [args]... Try 'snapcraft pack -h' for help. Error: unrecognized arguments: --add-ca-certificates I confirmed this option has been unavailable since 7.0. Due to this, packages cannot be installed from private package repository with self-signed SSL certificate.
