FTP source support requested in 2016 was implemented upstream: snapcraft PR #900 "sources: add ftp support" merged as commit eba7dd2b1, adding ftp:// URL downloads via urllib. Maintainer sergiusens linked that PR on the Launchpad bug, which was then closed.

Trying to snap gtk: No connection adapters were found for 'ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxslt/libxslt-1.1.29.tar.gz' I guess ftp isn't a valid source yet?
