Current evaluation

Requests the meson plugin default to --prefix=/usr instead of meson's /usr/local. Still unimplemented: craft-parts MesonPlugin passes only user meson-parameters; the plugin moved out of snapcraft, so fix must be upstream.

Suggested action: keep open

Reason: The behavior is still live: craft_parts/plugins/meson_plugin.py builds `meson setup ...` with only user-supplied meson-parameters, and its reference doc example still omits --prefix, so the /usr/local default persists. ~kalikiana's 2017 comment gives a concrete implementation sketch (add `--prefix` only if absent in meson_parameters) that remains applicable, though the code has since moved from snapcraft/plugins/meson.py to craft-parts, so snapcraft maintainers cannot fix it locally — it must be triaged/transferred upstream. Impact is moderate (annoying packaging workaround, not breakage) but the fix is small and the request is well-scoped, so keep it open rather than close.

Issue body

The meson plugin appears to put builds by default in /usr/local. This doesn't seem like a sensible default, so most application developers will have to specify --prefix for /usr which seems more common and consistent.

Related work

  • Related To: canonical/craft-parts#1346 (confidence 70%)

Merged PR that reworked the meson plugin's build commands (now `meson setup` + ninja); it did not address the default --prefix, and the code now lives in craft-parts/plugins/meson_plugin.py, so any fix must be made upstream.
