Current evaluation

Meson-installed desktop entries under /usr/local can expose named icons that Snapcraft misses because hicolor lookup is fixed to usr/share; the maintainer-acknowledged bug remains open.

Suggested action: keep open

Reason: The body provides a concrete giara-snap Meson example and proposes searching relative to the desktop file, and @~sergiusens acknowledged that metadata parsers should handle it. Current appstream.py finds desktop files under both usr/local/share and usr/share, but get_icon_from_theme still hardcodes usr/share/icons, confirming the reported case is unresolved.

Issue body

Example: https://github.com/ivocavalcante/giara-snap/commit/b58ab8ae635dc774e5d771b04f947c2371704d92 Meson defaults to /usr/local and Snapcraft will fail to find the icons. We could search relative to the desktop file (as well as /usr) to avoid hard-coding prefix.

keep open Desktop-entry icon discovery still hard-codes the /usr prefix, so Meson /usr/local installs can miss icons. The acknowledged issue remains open; current resolution still checks only the prime root and usr/share/icons.

keep open Meson /usr/local installs can still miss named desktop icons because metadata parsing hard-codes /usr/share/icons/hicolor. The open issue's maintainer comment points to a parser-level fix.
