Current evaluation

Missing `$` in a stage-packages variable is misclassified as a Chisel slice, causing a misleading missing-chisel build failure; reproduced on core22 and still open.

Suggested action: keep open

Reason: @~mr-cal reproduced the failure for core22 and explicitly agreed that error handling and user experience could be improved. Later craft-parts work (#904) auto-adds Chisel for detected slices, which may remove the missing-binary symptom, but no validation for malformed stage-package names or linked resolution is identified.

Issue body

If the user makes a typo in stage-packages and forgets the $ like so: stage-packages: - package:{CRAFT_TARGET_ARCH} Snapcraft for some reason then tries to run chisel, which does not exist in the snap and fails with the following message: chisel: No such file or directory This should probably be a syntax error in this case, rather than being interpreted by Snapcraft as something to do with chisel.

keep open A malformed stage-packages entry is misclassified as a Chisel slice, producing a misleading missing-chisel error. The core22 behavior was reproduced and acknowledged, but clearer validation is still needed.

  • Likely Fixed By: craft-parts#904 (confidence 70%)

The later change adds Chisel as a build snap when stage-packages contain slices, potentially preventing the missing-executable failure, but it does not demonstrate the requested early syntax error.
