Reason: The requested capability exists in the current implementation: craft_parts/plugins/autotools_plugin.py get_build_commands() emits "[ ! -f ./configure ] && [ -f ./autogen.sh ] && env NOCONFIGURE=1 ./autogen.sh", a bootstrap fallback, and "[ ! -f ./configure ] && autoreconf --install" — which covers the reporter's 'hackery' `automake --add-missing` — and this is documented in docs/common/craft-parts/reference/plugins/autotools_plugin.rst. It landed via merged PR snapcraft#3398 (commit 3fabd01b9, 'autotools v2 plugin: support autogen.sh and bootstrap') and earlier snapcraft#679 (ccbab09b7, 'add multiple generator script options to autotools'). The near-identical LP bugs #1507648 and #1882425 were both closed as already done. Only the proposed `preparation:` YAML key was never added, but explicit commands remain available via override-build.
