Current evaluation

Request (2019) for an official snapcraft Docker image able to build base: core18 snaps; unmaintained since 2020, in-repo Dockerfiles were removed in 24e70d6db in favor of canonical/snapcraft-rocks, and core18 now needs EOL Snapcraft 7.5.x.

Suggested action: close stale

Reason: The requested artifact is now obsoleted: docker/README.md states OCI images are 'officially supported by the https://github.com/canonical/snapcraft-rocks/ project' (tags 8_core22/8_core24, plus 7_core22), and commit 24e70d6db ('chore!: remove Dockerfile and document snapcraft-rocks registry', #5063) deleted the in-repo Dockerfiles the issue's manual FROM-swap workaround targeted. Docs list 'Snapcraft 7 is available for building core18 snaps' under 'Past releases' with only 7.5.8, i.e. the core18 path is an unmaintained major, and no maintainer has triaged the bug in 7 years (only pyro4hell and abitrolly commented with their own images). Near-duplicate of still-open launchpad#1814017.

Issue body

Official docker images with up to date snapcraft are provided on dockerhub here: https://hub.docker.com/r/snapcore/snapcraft But those images are all based on xenial (Ubuntu 16.04) and can't be used to build snaps based on core18 A manual fix is shown here by effectively replacing the `FROM` field with a bionic field https://snapcraft.io/docs/t/creating-docker-images-for-snapcraft/11739 It would be awesome if snapcraft core18 docker images would be provided by canonical instead of everyone by himself This would make it easier to use any cloud provider like gitlab-ci, travis-ci to create and publish snaps to the snapstore (not just for github users).

6bd9dac10 added the core18 base snap used by the old Dockerfiles, and b982555e1 (#2673) parametrized the images for core18 — the historical partial fulfillment now undone by the Dockerfile removal.
