Reason: The reporter's need (custom build commands instead of the plugin's default make step) is fully served by the generic lifecycle-override mechanism: ~kyrofa pointed to the prepare/build/install scriptlets 'as of Snapcraft v2.24' (snapcore/snapcraft#987, #988, #960), and the author replied 'the scriptlets feature is a better approach. Make all plugins more flexible'. That capability survives today as override-build/override-pull with craftctl default (docs/how-to/crafting/override-the-parts-lifecycle.rst), and the autotools plugin itself now lives in craft-parts, not this repo. No maintainer follow-up since 2016 and the reporter accepted the alternative, so nothing remains to implement here.
